This course is designed for higher education instructors seeking to expand their knowledge in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). This comprehensive program equips educators with the essential principles, strategies, and practical tools required to implement the CLIL approach effectively in their classrooms.

Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case studies, and hands-on activities, participants will gain a deep understanding of the CLIL approach, enabling them to seamlessly integrate language and content instruction in their teaching practice.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to apply CLIL principles to plan a course unit, using authentic materials and designing activities that incorporate the four C’s of CLIL (Communication, Culture, Cognition, Content).

  • Module 1: CLIL Approach (Overview): LPS, CLIL and EMI.
  • Module 2: CLIL Methodology: Communication.
  • Module 3: CLIL Methodology: Culture.
  • Module 4: CLIL Methodology: Cognition.
  • Module 5: CLIL Methodology: Content.
  • Module 6: CLIL Methodology: Assesment.
  • Module 7: Planning a CLIL Lesson.

    Ludmila Kalasnikova

    BA in English Philology with a specialisation in German and MA in Education from the University of Daugavpils (Latvia). Since 2011, she has been immersed in the field of education across a range of settings and stages and is currently involved in teaching Academic Skills for the Pre-Sessional Programme at the University of Southampton. In addition, alongside her teaching career, she obtained the CELTA and TKT certificates offered by Cambridge English Language Assessment and was awarded the European Union Comenius Assistantship..

    María del Mar Martín de Nicolás Moreno

    Master in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from the University of Alcalá de Henares (Spain). She also holds a PhD in Microbiology from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). Since 2002, she has participated as an expert in different masters in Didactics of Spanish, especially at the University of Alcalá and Harvard University. From 2016 to 2018 she was coordinator of the Spanish Section at Boston College (USA). She currently works at the Language Centre of the University of Heidelberg where, in addition to teaching, she coordinates the heiCLIL project.

    María Francisca Morales Hamame

    BA in English Linguistics from the University of Chile (UCH) and MA in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education at Boston College. Since 2007, she has taught languages at different universities, including Columbia University, The City University of New York and Universidad de Chile, where she is currently the Academic Coordinator of the Graduate English Program.

    Alicia N. Salomone

    She holds an MA in Global English from the University of Southampton and a TESOL certificate from Trinity College London. She also holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Chile (UCH). Since 2001 she has been an academic in the Literature Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Chile. Between 2014 and 2022, she was Director of Postgraduate and Postgraduate Studies at the UCH. From August 2022 to date, she has been Director of International Relations at UCH.

    Sarah Thome

    Master in Conference Interpreting and PhD student in Applied Linguistics at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). Her research interests focus on the application of data from eye-tracking experiments to the adaptation of didactic concepts in foreign language classrooms. She is academic coordinator of the Language Centre (Zentrales Sprachlabor) at the University of Heidelberg.

Who is the course for?

The course is addressed to:

  • University teachers who teach interdisciplinary subjects in different areas of knowledge, science and technology.
  • University teachers who teach foreign or second language classes, who want to learn about the CLIL approach in order to enrich their classes with specific disciplinary content.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students who want to be trained in the CLIL approach and enrich their pedagogical profile, teaching both content and a foreign language at the same time.
  • Teaching professionals who want to improve their teaching practice through CLIL.

What is the modality of this course?

The course will be 100% e-Learning, and will include synchronous classes (live via videoconferencing platform) and asynchronous activities. The course will be taught in English.

What are the course requirements?

To be a university professor who teaches interdisciplinary subjects in different areas of knowledge, science and technology, or a foreign language or second language. Alternatively, undergraduate and graduate students who want to be trained in the CLIL approach and enrich their pedagogical profile, teaching content and a foreign language at the same time, or professionals in the area of pedagogy who want to improve their teaching practice through CLIL.

How much time should you spend on the course?

The course will have a duration of 54 teaching hours, equivalent to 2 SCT credits (Chilean Credit Transfer System). Classes will be distributed over 10 weeks, starting on September 25, 2023.

How much will the course cost?

The course will be priced at $300.000 chilean pesos; which is equivalent to USD 340 or EUR 315, approximately. The amount must be paid once selected in the application process, applying the corresponding exchange rates at that time. The instructions for this procedure will be sent by e-mail by the academic coordination of the course.
